Web Portfolio Setup Instructions & Guidelines

This ASMP/Alaska web site is undergoing a major revision to make it photo buyer friendly and to make it easier for clients to find you, the member photographers. Each photographer can now post updated text information (see below) and two portfolios of up to 15 images each (30 images total).

Click here to see some examples.

WEB PORTFOLIOS

PLAN A: Make your own web galleries using Photoshop's automate menu:

Member portfolios can be used in any way the photographer chooses. Jim Barr's example includes one general overview portfolio, and one that is a photo essay (that he plans to change monthly) on a particular subject or location. Web portfolios are done as Photoshop web galleries to make it easier for photographers to build their own. NOTE: If you are not able to do this, please read down the page and check out "PLAN B, web portfolios."

Source folder for your gallery will be images in a folder on your hard drive.

Final image size in the portfolios is 450px on the long side for preview enlargements. Source images should have approximately that dimension.

File names will appear under each image, so the photographer should name each file appropriately. Images will be shown in filename order. Note: spaces and punctuation marks other than underscore (_) and ONE period before the extension (.JPG or .TIF) in filenames will cause problems. Upper and lower case letters sort separately, so be consistent. Use leading zeros for numbers 1-9 (01-09) to make numeric sequences sort correctly.

Caption data in embedded into Photoshop File Info will appear under each image, so the photographer should enter that, or provide a list of captions to be added, or specify no caption desired.

Create a containing folder using your last name and first initial (example: BarrJfolios). Create two additional folders inside it for each portfolio using your last name and "folio" and a number (example: barrfolio1 and barrfolio2). These are the "destination" folders for the galleries.

The settings for creating the web galleries have to be standard. To create a gallery go to Photoshop Automate>web gallery and use settings below.

Click here for step by step Photoshop 7 settings and screenshots.

Style: simple

Choose (Mac) or Browse (PC) by navigating to your source folder, which contains the images.

Destination will be one of the folders you created (example: barrfolio1 for the first gallery; barrfolio2 for the second gallery). Navigate to the folder.

NOTE: Header bar text can fit into just two lines in Photoshop 6 but the minimum space in Photoshop 7 is enough for four lines of text ... 5 lines if the e-mail option is used. You choose what information (if any) goes in each blank line ... the e-mail link option, if used, will be the bottom line.

Titles for each portfolio can include up to about 30 words of additional explanatory text with the title; in Photoshop 7 titles follow the name of the photographer on the first and/or second line of the banner options screen.

Banner:

site name: photographer's name plus short optional text (*30 words)
Photographer: portfolio title or description (*30 words)
date: delete the date that is auto-entered here and leave it blank
    font: Helvetica
    font size: 4
(Photoshop 7 has an e-mail link option and contact phone # option)

Gallery Images:

    border size: 0
captions: check captions in Photoshop 7 if using File Info captions
    copyright checked (on)
Resize Images checked (on), select large for size (450px)
    JPEG quality: 8 or 9
    font: Arial
    font size: 2

Gallery Thumbnails:

captions: use filename checked (on), use captions: optional (causes caption in Photoshop File Info to appear as caption in gallery.)
    copyright checked (on)
    size: custom, 164px
    columns: 3
    rows: 5
    border size: 2px
    font: Arial
    font size: 2

Custom Colors:

    background: 666666
    banner: 663333
    text: ffffff
    active link: ff0000
    link: ffffff
    visited link: E3E3E3

Finished web portfolios will be too large for e-mail but can be uploaded to the web via ftp (preferable) or submitted on a CD ... send e-mail for ftp directions or alternate delivery methods.

PLAN B (Web Portfolios): Help is available, as needed, upon request ... some members may wish to provide scans and have us create web galleries for them. Please use e-mail link below to request help and indicate what sort of help will be needed.

TEXT FOR MEMBER PAGES

To make the chapter web site work for photo buyers, we are going to a new, standard, text format. All member pages will have a similar look. Updated "about the photographer" text needs to be posted at the same time as the new portfolios. (Current biographical text will be removed.)

PLAN A (Text): There are six text headings: STOCK FILES, GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE, ASSIGNMENT SPECIALTIES, OTHER, CREDITS, and AGENTS. All textual information must fit into these categories (similar to AgPix.com.) You can use a total of 250 words here, divided up among the categories in whatever way works best for you. Just no more than 250 words total. You can also post a link to a stock list.

PLAN B (Text): A photographer can opt to have no text on his/her page, in which case we will post their information from the National Find a Photographer search page (as is done automatically) and nothing else.

[To update your information in the NATIONAL Find a Photographer database click this link. Changes require your member number, which is printed on your ASMP membership card. New data is uploaded to the national ASMP web site the first of each month.]

Click here to request info or e-mail updated text to webmaster.
