"I have always been fascinated with the men and women whose livelihoods are dependent upon the sea. It is a complex triangular relationship that exists between an unpredictable resource, the boats and equipment used to harvest it and the free will, ego, ambition and ingenuity that is unique to every fisherman. In my photography, I try to capture the survivors, those whose personal drive and bond with the marine environment keep them returning to the sea."
James's fine art prints have a distinctive style, ranging from the real to the surreal, and often involve complex digital techniques. They are hand printed on neutral pH watercolor papers using archival pigmented inks.
In 1999, James started North Cape Graphics, a photography and graphic design business located in Anchorage. He provides digital photographic services, including event coverage, environmental portraiture, and special assignments.
