Don Pitcher was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up on the East Coast from Florida to Maine. His photographic work springs from a lifetime of travel and exploration that has taken him to all 50 states, along with 35 nations on six continents.

Don took photography classes in college, and worked as a staff photographer on newspapers and annuals. He graduated with a master's degree in fire ecology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981, and a love of nature brought him north to Alaska the following year. He worked for more than a dozen seasons with federal and state agencies on wildlife, fire, recreation, and fisheries projects.

Don's extensive background in the outdoors, combined with a love of travel and photography, have helped him carve out a career as a travel photographer and writer.

He photographed best-selling books on Alaska and Wyoming for Compass American Guides (Random House), and is the author of travel guides to Alaska, Wyoming, and Washington (Moon Publications), and the city of Berkeley (Heyday Books). In addition, his photos have appeared in many books, calendars, magazines, newspapers, posters, and other publications, and have been used in national advertising campaigns.

Don Pitcher is usually on the road for several months a year, with extended visits to Southeast Asia, South America, Central America, and Australia in the last four years. In addition, he spends several months each year researching, writing, and photographing guidebooks. Don bases his travels from Homer, where he lives with his wife, Karen Shemet.
